About the product
Industrial sulfur is mainly a by-product of sour-gas sweetening and oil refining, recovered in sulfur recovery (Claus) units. Market sulfur is normally “bright yellow” with a purity above 99.5% and is classified by physical form: granular (formed pellets, low dust, suited to bulk handling), lump, powder and, on some routes, molten sulfur.
Uses and consuming industries
- Sulfuric acid, the largest single use of sulfur worldwide, and from it phosphate fertilizers, metallurgy and chemicals
- Agriculture: agricultural and sulfur-bentonite products for alkaline soils and crop sulfur
- Rubber and polymers: vulcanisation
- Chemicals: carbon disulfide, sulfites, dyes, pyrotechnics and pharmaceuticals
- Construction materials: sulfur concrete and sulfur asphalt

Solid sulfur produces combustible dust; safety requirements and a safety data sheet (SDS) accompany bulk and bagged shipments.
Usual packaging and transport
Bulk (vessel and truck) for granular sulfur; 25 and 50 kg polypropylene bags; 1 to 1.25 t jumbo bags. Powder is normally supplied in moisture-proof lined bags.
